Media Alert: Bob Crumley Files Public Records Requests Over Email Scandal

For Immediate Release

Bob Crumley, attorney general candidate, requests records from Attorney
General and Department of Cultural Resources concerning state email policy.

Greensboro, April 4, 2008 - With each passing day we learn more about the
disregard of the state public records laws by elected officials and Raleigh bureaucrats.

Yesterday, we learned the Department of Cultural Resources, with the consent of the Attorney General, has given line employees the power to determine the “reference or administrative value” of email they either send or receive. If they believe there is no longer reference or administrative value to the email, they may delete the public record without oversight, which I believe is a violation of the state public records law.

Apparently, Roy Cooper does not see the danger in allowing employees who send or receive email to determine whether or not the email should be kept as a public record. Such a policy opens the door for continued political scandal and undermines any effort to ensure ethics in state government. As noted by one speaker during the panel meeting, if these policies were followed by the General Assembly, Jim Black would still be Speaker.

Today, I am requesting from the Attorney General and the Department of Cultural Resources, any and all public records relating to the creation of this policy. We must determine the involvement of the Attorney General in the creation of such ill-advised policies and stop line employees from having the ability to destroy public records.

Add this, yet another example of Roy Cooper’s failure of leadership, to the Cooper Kit.
